Well, once again we are long over due in updating the blog. So here it goes...
Mark continues to be gone two nights a week at the plant. He spends many hours on the road each week but uses it as an opportunity to sleep! His hair continues to get shorter and shorter as Jeffrey uses a different attachment each time he goes to get his haircut. Last week Jeffrey told him, "Mark I know you sure about this but I'm not". He is liking the peninsula look on his head less and less but doesn't want to do the Mr. Clean look so this is the no maintenance plan hair cut. He has started his Mandarin lessons again on Friday and we are starting to work with the youth on Sundays.
Elise is falling into the groove of school and her social life. While she still doesn't love Geometry she is doing just fine in it. I did have to go to the teacher and let him know that since he requires the kids to work together in class he needed to tell the majority of the class that they needed to speak English since they attend an English speaking school. (not Korean) Now that she can understand her classmates I think things are getting better:) She has joined the newspaper and yearbook club and also tried out for the high school play. They are doing A Midsummer night's Dream and she has been told that she is Bottom. For all of you Shakespeare buffs you will know what I am talking about. Elise has started babysitting a little bit again which is great for us because our money tree has finally gotten a branch to blossom again:) She is doing great in the friend area and never seems to be lacking for much to do. This weekend she had a birthday party which included dinner at a Thai restaurant and bowling.
Jacob continues to love playing Rugby and figuring life out. My easy going Jake who has always made friends easily seems to be having a little more difficulty here. He says there aren't many good choices which for that I am grateful that he is choosey. He did go swimming with the neighbor boys this weekend and hung out and watched movies Friday night. His phone also never quit ringing on Saturday while we were at the electronics market because Carla wanted to know if he would go out with Angaline:) Do you all remember those great days when you friend would call the boy for you!?! Well his dad put the kabash on that in a hurry but apparently he didn't even need to because Jacob already had. For that I am also grateful. Jacob also started extra Mandarin lessons on Sunday mornings. He is ahead of Elise and Levi because he jumped right into Mandarin class last year and they didn't. So we are going to have to put him in private lessons because he was really ticking his sister off when he would answer before she could:)
Noah continues to be his feisty ,driver self. He hates Mandarin and so he didn't want to take lessons with everyone else. He loves to help me cook (when I do) and so yesterday while everyone else was at language lessons he wanted to make chocolate chip cookies. Well, we have done this enough together so I decided to let him make them all by himself. So he got the cookies all mixed up and then I helped him with our wonderful oven. We got the cookies in the oven and they went flat as a pancake and burned. So we tried the toaster oven and the same thing happened. Then he confessed that we didn't have enough flour and so he just used what we had. Thus the flattened and burned cookies. Lesson learned I still have to supervise. Noah is also doing a club at school called Tech monkey's and is enjoying that. He loves having a friend live right underneath us that is his age and they have a boy Jacob's age also. So the 5 boys will often go shoot hoops after school for a while. Homework is very intense for the boys as they often have 1 1/2-2 hours every night but their teacher does give them the weekends off.
Levi is starting to like school. He was so overwhelmed with the amount of homework! Ok, I think that was an understatement! He was sure I should talk to the teacher. However, me being the merciful mom that I am told him, "Levi, the way I see it, you have two options here. You can buck it up and do the work because it isn't that it is too hard and you aren't understanding it or you can not do the work, fail the 6th grade and have Ms. Smith again next year." His response was, "good point mom!" So he seems to be bucking it up. He is also doing Tech monkey's after school. Both Noah and Levi are keeping busy with new friends and both of them went to a friends house after school Friday night and then on Saturday they had a birthday party where they went rock climbing. He enjoyed his first out of school Mandarin lesson yesterday and is looking forward to doing class with just Elise because it was ticking him off too that Jacob knew all of the answers.
Well, I guess that leaves me. I continue to meet new people each week but have found a few Christian women who I enjoy spending time with. Our Bible study roster is full and we are having leader training this Wednesday and Bible study starts next week. Mark and I are both working with the youth on Sunday's and I am going to be helping our youth leader do some administration stuff periodically. I too am starting Mandarin lessons this week with 3 of my friends. I also still cook and grocery shop a few times a week, have lunch with friends, go to Jacob's rugby games, play mahjong on Thursday, go for foot massages with my man on Thursday nights, read, walk, help friends when needed etc. etc.
So that's life in China!
Now for my two funny experiences in the last week.
I have a new favorite store called Metro. It is like a Sam's club and you have to have a membership to shop there. Therefore, it just isn't as crowded, I can do the most one stop shopping there (sort of like Meijer) and that just makes me a better Christian than when I would go to Carrefour.
So, I have been on the great hunt for cotton balls. Well, I finally found them!! My issue wasn't in the lack of cotton balls here in the PRC but that I was simply calling them the wrong thing. I was so excited that I picked up the bag and imagine my suprise when it said TAMPONS in big letters across the front. I was a little confused as I further inspected them and didn't find any strings. They are indeed cotton balls under the guise of tampons. Not sure if they use tampons here but I'm wondering if I would have to call them cotton balls!?!
Okay, so my second funny story also happened at Metro but on a different day from the whole tampon experience. So, I am standing in a long line because stupid me went there on a Saturday. There was a young couple behind me with about an 8 month old baby boy in there cart. This family was buying some new sheets and thankfully they came in a plastic like bag. Well they had the little boy sitting on the package of sheets waiting patiently in line. Well, as any 8 month old would do he crapped his split pants right on the package of sheets. What confused me the most about this was that one, the parents were confused and suprised by this and two they were totally unprepared for it. The dad pulls this little wadded up kleenex out of his pocket and gives it to the mom to clean up this big ol' poop mess. So, here's me the only american around observing all of this and thinking ok what would Jesus do. So, since I am american and have learned the necessary things to always carry in my purse I whipped out my wet wipes and let them use them. They were very grateful. So maybe I changed the opinon on American's for one Chinese family or maybe not! I was grateful for the whole experience though because I had something funny to blog about again. And I thought my days of carrying a diaper bag were over!?!! Who would've thought.
Hope all is well with each of you!
Blessings,
Natalie

Ohhhh...I am so glad you posted...I've been checking daily, just hoping to hear from my friends. Only to find nothing.I was beginning to feel like I was stalking you, wanting to know your every move! Wondering why you weren't writing me, did you forget me? What has become more important than blogging your US friends?! BUT--
Then you came through..you still love all of us...big sigh of relief! And I now know what you've been up to and I feel much better.
Nat - we got our new worship team schecule. Communion Sundays are October 7th and Nov 18th JUST SO YOU KNOW!
Love Love Karen
Finally, I feel like we are connected to our China family once again. So, glad to hear from you!
(although I had a nice note from Mark this week)
Natalie, do you remember that cake you (I believe it was you) made and you thought it called for two cups of baking soda when it was only supposed to be two teaspoons. Although, we didn't have two whole cups of soda, you thought what was in the box was going to be enough. Well, I had to think of that story when you were telling about Noah's chocolate chip cookies and not having enough flour. At least they didn't bubble over and run all over the oven.
Levi - I'm sure glad your beginning to like school once again. Keep up the good work - one thing for sure - you don't want to be in that class again next year, now do you?
Elise, I have to tell you, Geometry was just not one of Grandma's favorite subjects in High School either. In fact, the teacher was so bad and didn't know how to teach the class in the first place. My dad even went to school and talked to him but to no avail. Grandma ended up with the worst grade of any subjects I ever took in High School, but I did pass it and that was all that was important.
Jacob, you sound like you are now rejoicing in your Mandarin language. Grandma is really glad to hear this because I remember when you were staying with us and had one of your classes here at the house one evening. You came out of the class and pitched your paper across the counter top and said, "Geez Grandma, I really hate this stuff - it is really hard" - now look where you are. I knew you could do it!!
Natalie, Grandpa and I laughed so hard reading your story about your new grocery store. Thanks for sharing!
We love you all and surely look forward to seeing you all once again.
Mom R
Well, I'm pretty proud of all of you!! It sounds like there are a lot of right choices being made here. Noah, don't worry about the cookies. We all have done stuff like that, but some of us had gardens to bury our mistake in before our parents kneww what took place. The best part is that you are willing to try!! Levi, you made a great decision!! All of us have had classes that we hated but to spare ourselves of failure we bucked up and got through them!!! Jake, when did you become Mr. Stidly!!! All these girls calling you What's up with that. I bet your siblings were mad at you for always jumping ahead of them with the answers!! Mark, I can appreciate the no care hair. I would have no care hair if I could figure out how to do it! Natalie, you are an absolute riot. Leave it to you to come up with cotton balls that are called tampons in China!!!! Oh, my, I bet that won't be the last time you find such a dicrepancy in the language that will bring a good laugh. I'm so glad that you set the WWJD in gear for that dismayed couple. Enjoy!
Aunt Carol
Well, Jake, I'd better do a better job of proof reading. I meant Mr. Studley!!
Aunt Carol
Nats, I laughed until I cried at your story of the poopy 8 month old. It is good that you are the girl we all want with us, because you carry everything in your purse!!! Very funny. Aren't there any diapers for babies in China? My goodness, I wonder what those parents were thinking. Maybe they should have hurried him outside to poop on the sidewalk.
Thanks for taking the time to update. It is much easier just to talk, I know. I am still waiting for my Skype phone. Call me anyway if you get the chance. We can catch up again.
Love and hugs to all my nephews and my lovely niece.
Beth
Thanks for updating, Natalie...I too was wondering if the blog had breathed its last breath. I see now it was just coming up for air. :-)
Your Metro stories were hysterical. I'll never look at cotton balls in quite the same way again. I'm sure I'll giggle every time I buy them at WalMart from now on.
What IS the story on the split pants on 8-month-olds? Could it be that they truly expect them to be potty trained that young? I do remember reading about a mis***ry family in Papua New Guinea that observed a similar phenomena with the natives there. The moms would carry the infants in a little papoose of sorts, completely buck-naked. Occasionally, they would take the babies out, dangle them over the ground, and the babies would relieve themselves. They actually "learned" to hold it until their mothers dangled them again next time. So maybe there's something to it. Obviously, the little guy in your story got his signals corn-fused.
Anyhow, thanks for a good laugh! That'll keep me until the next update...
Betsy
Hi! - It was good to hear from you again and get an update on what everyone is up to.
Contratulation Elise on your role in the school play. Hope you enjoy that. I think Aunt Laurie & Angie were on the high school yearbook staff so if you need any suggestions you can talk to them. I think they thoroughly enjoyed that.
Jacob be careful playing Rugby as I hear that is a pretty rough sport. Sounds like you are the Mandarin pro. Your dad said you will be our tour guide when we come to visit. That should make our trip a little less frustrating if someone knows the language.
Noah - It sounds like you are going to be a "Chef" when you grow up. Keep practicing on those cookies and I am sure you will get them perfected. What is Tech monkey's all about? Sounds like even with your school homework you still have time to play with friends and it is nice to have some very close to you.
Levi - Sounds like you are really getting into the homework routine. That is good. Like your mom says, it is entirely up to you to make the right choice. You are also in Tech Monekeys? You will need to let me know what that is all about. Sounds like you are enjoying your friends and "went rock climbing!" What an experience. Keep studying the Mandarin and soon you will be as good as Jacob.
Natalie - Sounds like you are keeping really busy with your own activities and the kids. Thanks for the update on everyone. So glad you finally found your "cotton balls". Sorry to hear about your other experience. I would have probably upchucked on the spot. I guess that would be one thing that would be hard to adjust to.
Sounds like you and Mark are getting involved in your church and that should keep you busy along with all the other activities you are involved with. I wish I could get a massage every week. That sure sounds great!
We have good news! We are on lot 35 next year. That is the one on the end. I was praying for a lot close to the office so that everyone can use their laptops if you come to visit up north next summer. That is the lot that dad has always wanted. There is a lot of room and no neighbors on the side of us. We feel very fortunate!
Talk to you later.
Hey Elise, congrats on getting the part of Bottom! You are going to love Shakespear! A Mid Summer's Night Dream is one of my favorites and I am smiling even now as I picture you acting out the scenes.
Natalie, thanks for the laughs...my face hurts.
love you, Colleen
Ah...what a good post. I haven't been by your blog in awhile because I've cut back on my a.m. computer time in order to exercise- you really can't have it all.
I've been missing you while I"ve been away, so it was good to hear your "voice" again.
Abby has been talking about that "tall girl" with the three boys. It took me awhile to realize that you were the "tall" girl:-) She really took to you this summer. And it doesn't hurt that you were staying at Uncle Jim's house. My girls sure do love that man.
Love to your fam. Tell Elise to email me her review of Deathly Hallows, if she wouldn't mind too terribly. I always like to hear what other people think.
