Just when I thought life was becoming, normal, routine, boring (whatever adjective you prefer to use)......
Thursday night, after talking to Mark's mom, the kids were doing homework and Levi and I were watching a movie. Elise emerged from her cave and wondered what smelled. No one knew, so we opened the patio door and got back to our duties. A few minutes later, we all started to wonder and so I had Levi open the front door. Our whole hall was filled with smoke. So the kids and I grabbed shoes, my purse and got out of the apartment. I called the service center and told them they needed to get someone over there now. We ran down the stairs and our neighbor and his two kids were just getting home. So he ran upstairs and got his wife and newborn baby. When he got outside we started calling every apartment and telling them to get out. We did get to meet a lot of our neighbors. In the meantime, a few people from the service center showed up and checked things out. Our electrical box in the hallway had burned up. We never saw any flames, just lots of smoke and man did it stink. So they took me back up to my apartment and assured me that was what really happened and that everything was going to be ok. So I turned everything off so that they could shut the power off to our apartment and put in a new electrical box. The kids and I went and hung out at Nancy's apartment for a while. Needless to say, the kids were pretty shook up and were freaked out that it was now 10:30 and their homework wasn't done. But everyone was safe and our apartment seems to be in good working order again. I also remembered that the red buttons on my wall are to be pushed when there is an emergency.
Yesterday, Ron's wife Bonnie and I traveled up to Zhangjiagang to see our men. (Betsy, Mark has a bachelor pad in ZJG that he stays at a couple of nights a week. It takes about 2-2 1/2 hours to get to the site from Shanghai where DC is building this plant) So that is who Ron is. Mark and Ron were actually shift partners about 5 years ago before Ron retired. DC hired him back for this project. He's a good guy and him and Mark get along very well. He's also a Christian and so I'm glad Mark can share a lovely bungalow with him. So Bonnie and I made the trip. It was fun, but a very gross and rainy day out. So the guys just showed us their apartment and then took us to lunch at their favorite restaurant. Our dinning(yes, I meant to type it that way because that is what the sign at the restaurant says) was a very slow and interesting experience. It took us 2 hours for lunch and we were one of two tables. I had really wanted chicken, but alas there was no chicken to be found at the Champ de Ble! So, she wondered if I liked fish. Yes, I do like fish and was feeling even a little adventuresome. So my fish comes out on a plate. That's all nothing else, just one big fish, pan fried, head, tail, scales and all on a plate. So I chopped the head off and pried it open to find a bunch of rosemary twigs. But I started picking and soon my fish was gone. It was really quite good, just a lot of work to eat it. After lunch, we had to head back home because it's another 2 1/2 hours and the kids would be home from school.
A couple of weekends ago, when the boys were playing soccer at Dulwich, the befriended a national boy named Gong. Well, Jacob and Gong have become good friends. I think he text's Jacob on a daily basis. They were going to get together last night and play soccer, but the weather was really gross. So he came over for dinner and we ordered Papa John's. The boys just hung out and played Wii and PS2. He couldn't stay long though, because he had already been at school on friday from 6:30-6:10 and he had a class on Saturday morning. He also told us that he has a 5 hour class on Sunday. Now, you know why the Chinese are so smart. They eat sleep and breathe school. If I had to guess I would say this boy comes from a wealthy family. His dream is to go to college in the States but only a few lucky ones get to do that. Yesterday, was international kids day. This is a special day for kids and their parents buy them gifts. Thankfully, the boys knew he was coming with gifts for them, so we also got him a gift. He bought the boys a Nike soccer ball, soccer trading cards and some posters of famous soccer teams. He also came with a box of individual cakes from a local bakery. We have had more cake this week. He seems to be a very nice kid. He wanted our boys to pick an american name for him that was close to his chinese name. So they chose Greg for him. He said he liked it, but we'll see if he uses it. That is something that many of them do. A lot of them choose ordinary names, but some of them choose some funky ones, like Sky, River, Cherry or Rain are some that we have seen.
Another way that I was reminded that I was in China, was when I opened up my email last night and found a note from the music teachers at Concordia. Apparently Jacob has a concert Tuesday night and he needs to wear navy pants. Navy pants for boys are hard enough to find in the States let alone China. So off we went to the fabric market today. After Jacob got all measured he pointed to a date of June 10 when they would be ready. I though he was going to faint when I told him I needed them on Tuesday. He spoke to his other co-worker and after a few minutes she whipped out the calculator (and I thought oh no, this is going to cost me a fortune to get them by Tuesday) and typed in 90. I didn't even barter with her because I knew I was inconveniencing them. So for 90 yuan (about $12) Jacob will have navy pants for his concert on Tuesday. He assured me that he was never wearing them again after that!! I figure for 12 bucks, who cares:)
Another way I was reminded that my life really isn't too normal, is the fact that Elise, Levi and I have all had queasy guts for about 3 days now. We call it the Shanghai gut. You never know when you are going to get it or what causes it, because you all can eat the same thing and half of you will get sick and half won't.
So, that's been our lives the last couple of days. I guess not so ordinary after all!!!
Love to you all!

Oh Nats, you are just one adventure after another!! I cracked up all through your blog. I'm so glad that everyone in your building is fine and that there wasn't any major damage.
I was concerned for a minute about your fish at the fine "dinning" restaurante'. I'm so glad it didn't turn out like the one I had at a food court in Putrajaya. The nastiest fish I have ever tasted. And I love all kinds of fish. Fortunately they did have chicken too, so the fish got to see the bottom of the garbage can. It also had a tail, scales, head, etc. Everyone thought I was brave for even trying it. I was very disappointed.
I'm afraid that Michael also would refuse to wear navy pants after a required event. It is wonderful that you only had to pay $12 for them. How was the concert?
Michael got Jacobs's yearbook yesterday, and he still needs to have friends sign it. He said that the "year book" signing party after school yesterday was a zoo. I thought they would be in the hallways, but they all were in the cafeteria, and Michael said there were 50 or so books all on the same table at a time. He was worried about keeping track of two books. Is there anyone in particular that Jake wants autographs from? Hopefully Michael can do that. I know they are sticklers at Jefferson for having your yearbook there for the 1/2 week of school.
So, I'll talk with you soon.
Much love and hugs,
Beth
Wow, so Mark missed the family's REAL Chinese Fire Drill! So sad. How do you scream "FIRE!" in Marndarin? "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" That would work! Glad all is well. Are those red buttons like those old people things for "I've fallen and I can't get UP"??
We have a Kids Day at our house! We created it by averaging the Day of the year that each was born (like 11, 20, 187, etc) and they each get to pick out a gift at the store, and we go out to eat. HEY!--they stole my idea!
Little league is going well, the president is never to be seen and so all is flowing nicely. Nolan is getting pretty good at hitting. Kal, well, he looks cute in his uniform! It's been nice and hot for most of the games.
Hey, if I send you the measurements for Nolan, can you have them whip up a longs sleeve red shirt for his ballet show?! (Yeah, sure, I'll get right on that!)
Oh my goodness, Nats, you guys do go from one thing to another! I am so glad for Elise's nose. It seems like you guys were the "saviors" for your apartment building. I just wonder if you have any damage from smoke, like does your clothing or your furniture stink? Just think of the memeories you will have of your lives in China! And, when you are old and your kids come to visit, you will have great stories to reminisce upon!
We are on a marathon "graduation party" run today. We have three different parties to attend today covering 4 kids, and then tomorrow we have another party that will cover three kids. Fun times...
We love you all and hope things get aired out at your place. We are looking forward to you coming back soon.

Oh my goodness!! Talk about freaking out - you know how to freak out Grandma! I am sure happy and thankful that everyone is okay. It's bad enough staying in a strange country alone with your kids, let alone having that kind of problem Sure hope that you aren't all smoked up. Thanks Elise - you are a gem!
Grandpa & Grandma are slowing getting our house back together after the big sanding experience on our hardwood floor in our kitchen and front entrance. BUT, it looks so much better - you are going to love it.
That fish dinner DID NOT sound a bit good to me, so sorry. I'm afraid I would have returned it.
I, too, am anxious to hear how Jacob's concert went. Jacob, I bet you were one handsome dud in those navy pants with your blond colored hair. You just might like them so much that you'll want to continue to wear them. Glad you have found another friend to hang around with.
You may be interested in hearing that Chole went to see Dr. Butler this week and he thinks that she looks wonderful (she's lost two pounds on her new food and he was glad to see that). She continues to amuse and delight us with her charming personality. I might add she was just quite interested in smelling all the brownies that I was baking last night for the church dinner on Sunday. Seems I've heard stories before about Chloe and brownies (no, she didn't get any - I made quite certain that wouldn't happen).
Love you all and looking forward to seeing you soon,
Grandma R
I have got to meet your friend Karen some day. That lady is a hoot.
Bergers - What an adventure!!! I am glad Elise has a nose that works.
Big news at the Hoag house..........Nick got a job!!!!!
There was great excitement by all and Dan broke into the halleluiah chorus. Needless to say, Nick didn't like his singing or his song choice. Hmmm...sounds like American Idol. Oh, I bet you are wondering what and where. Well, where else but cooking at the local Big Boy, of course!!! He goes for orientation tomorrow. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!!! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I think he is excited to finally have more money coming in. He has had that paper route since 5th grade.
Dan had plans to take over Nick's route, but the paper route on our street opened up this week so he applied for that. He would prefer this route over Nick's, because his is very spread out and starts a couple streets from our house. He whould start about the time Nick ends his.
WoooHooo.... we're on a roll! Let's just get the father of the house a new job and all will be well. If ya'll need something to pray about, Dave's job with Midland Public Schools will end on June 30th because of outsourcing. We know God has a plan, so we are just hanging out in His waiting room for now. We are so thankful for our friends and family and for all of the prayers, support and help they are giving to Dave. Remember Bill Gaither's song from a 100 years ago..... I just feel like something good is about to happen, I just feel like something good is on it's way!! That's how I feel. It certainly seems like it's Dave's turn for something good.
Keep praying everyone!
Hey Tonia, about that friend Karen.........she lives in Midland and IS crazy!! We do love her and yes, you do need to meet her. Maybe Nats can do the intro when she is in town next month.
Gotta run,
Love ya'll
Aunt wen
Wow! Mark didn't say anything about your smoke problem. That must have been scary. Glad all worked out ok and everyone in the building is safe. With the new electrical box you should all be safe now on your floor. Have they checked out the other floors? What caused it?
Natalie, I prefer my fish without the head and the scales. I think I would have lost my appetite real quick. Dad went up to the trailer this last weekend and caught about 18 blue gill. Can't wait to have them. They are so good. We are planning on going up again this weekend so hopefully he will catch a few more.
The shower was a success. I will be a pro at the sticky buns now! Thanks for your help with the recipe.
Hope Jacob's concert is a hit Tuesday night.
Hope all your stomachs are feeling ok by now.
Talk to you later
Yeah, Natalie, when are you going to be in town? Can we plan an evening for you to invite who YOU want to get together and chit chat for a few hours? with food/snacks. I'll plan it! Give me a date. Then I will put on my best behavior and meet this Tonia.
Hey Karen,
You'll have to coordinate a few schedules in order to meet Tonia. She lives in the Grand Rapids area. Tonia is our very beloved cousin and we are very excited to get to see her on Saturday night at her dad's retirement party. Unfortunately Nats won't be home quite yet. We'll miss you guys there, Bergers. It just won't be the same without you.
Beth
Beth...Tonia, Grand Rapids, Saturday night, Retirement Party, Crash it?! I believe I'm free....
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (SNORT)
Ahem...did the Bergs fall off the blogosphere? Almost one week without an update...I think that's a record...
